Gemini. The AI that lives inside Google Workspace

What Google offers right now, which plan reaches which feature, and how to install your context files so you stop re-explaining your business. Prices and features change, so every claim here is checked against Google's own announcements and pricing pages.

CURRENT PLANS

What each plan gets you.

Start on the lowest plan that covers the work you do every week. Upgrade when you hit a real limit.

PlanPriceBest for
Free$0Most generous free tier, and it got better in July. Gemini 3.6 Flash chat (available to everyone in the Gemini app since July 21, 2026), Gemini Live voice on 3.8 Live Extended Thinking, Nano Banana 2 images with Personal Intelligence, 50 daily AI credits, 15GB storage.
Google AI Plus$4.99/monthBudget tier at $4.99 with 400GB storage. Limited Veo 3.1 Lite via Flow, 200 monthly credits. At $4.99 this is now the cheapest real AI subscription of the three big platforms.
Google AI Pro$19.99/monthThe sweet spot. Gemini 4 Argon, 3.1 Pro, and 3.8 Flash access, Deep Research, skills (replacing Gems), 1M context, higher Gemini Notebook limits, 5TB storage. Best value if you use Google. Eligible US college students can get a free year (redeem by December 31, 2026).
Google AI Ultra$199.99/month (Ultra 20x) or $99.99/month (Ultra 5x)Maximum everything. Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Deep Think, full Veo 3.1, 25,000 credits, 30TB, YouTube Premium.
CONTEXT INSTALLATION

Gemini: Skills + Notebooks + Gemini Notebook (skills replace Gems)

Where your three context files live in Gemini, and how to keep them working.

Set it up

Create a "Brand Brain" skill (skills replace Gems; Google ends Gems support starting in November for personal accounts). Paste distilled content from all three files into its instructions and attach the files as reference files. Create a "Brand & Business Library" in Gemini Notebook with the three files plus representative emails, landing pages, slide decks. For each major initiative, create a Notebook and link relevant Drive docs + Gemini Notebook notebooks. Run your Brand Brain skill with a forward slash in any chat about that work.

How it gets used

The Brand Brain skill acts as your persona overlay. Gemini Notebook allows in-depth Q&A over your own materials and generates audio/video overviews. Notebooks tie projects to sources.

Day to day

Ask Gemini: "Using my /Brand Brain skill and Brand Library, write a new sales page for this Doc." For teaching/research, Gemini Notebook shines: "Explain my whole body of work on burnout to a new therapist in 10 minutes."

Watch out

The ecosystem is spread across Gemini Chat, skills, Notebooks, Gemini Notebook, and Workspace. If you built a Brand Gem, check the migrated skill once Google moves it. Can feel fragmented at first. Keep one canonical version of each context file and update as you evolve.

Gemini ChatGoogle's main AI conversation interface.
What it is
Google's main AI conversation interface. Available at gemini.google.com, as a mobile app on iOS and Android, and now as a native Mac desktop app (launched April 15, 2026). Built in Swift, not Electron. Global keyboard shortcut (Option+Space) opens a mini-chat from anywhere. The standout feature: share any window in one click and ask Gemini about it, killing screenshot copy-paste workflows. Free on any Apple Silicon Mac (macOS Sequoia 15.0+, Intel Macs not supported). Since September 10, 2026 the Gemini app also runs on Windows 10 or later: press Alt + Space to open Gemini over your active work. Gemini is becoming the AI layer across all of Google's products. New since Google I/O 2026: Daily Brief, an out-of-the-box agent rolling out to all paid Google AI subscribers (Plus, Pro, Ultra; 18+, US) that organizes your inbox, calendar, and tasks each morning. Gemini Spark, a more autonomous agent, runs on Gemini 3.7 Flash (since August 13, 2026) and is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in over 160 countries.
Use it when
Your work lives in Google. Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive. Gemini talks to all of them natively. If you are a Google Workspace user, this is the AI that already knows where your files are.
What you need
A Google account.
Plan required
- Free: $0. Gemini 3.6 Flash for chat (available to everyone in the Gemini app since July 21, 2026), Gemini Live on 3.8 Live Extended Thinking for real-time voice (since September 15, 2026), Nano Banana 2 images with Personal Intelligence, 50 daily AI credits, 15GB storage. Workspace Intelligence pulls real-time context from Gmail/Chat/Calendar/Drive. - Google AI Plus: $4.99/month with 400GB storage. Limited Veo 3.1 Lite via Flow, 200 monthly credits. - Google AI Pro: $19.99/month. Gemini 4 Argon (rolling out since October 13, 2026), Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Gemini 3.8 Flash (since September 2, 2026), Deep Research and Deep Research Max agents, skills (replacing Gems), 1M token context, Gemini Notebook (plus Notebooks in the Gemini app, which sync with it), Nano Banana Pro, 5TB Google storage. Includes the macOS native Gemini app and Gemini CLI. - Google AI Ultra 20x: $199.99/month. Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Deep Think, full Veo 3.1, 25,000 monthly credits, 30TB storage, YouTube Premium included. - Google AI Ultra 5x: $99.99/month with 20TB storage. Added at Google I/O 2026 for developers, technical leads, knowledge workers, and advanced creators.
Limitation
The free tier is one of the most generous in the industry, especially with Workspace Intelligence pulling real-time context from Gmail/Chat/Calendar/Drive and Personal Intelligence personalizing image generation. But Pro (Gemini 4 Argon + Gemini 3.1 Pro + Deep Research Max + Notebooks) is a real step up. If you are serious about using AI for business, you will outgrow Free quickly. Pro at $19.99/month includes 5TB of Google storage, which makes it the best value if you already pay for Google One. Gemini also now imports chat history from ChatGPT and Claude. Handy if you're switching defaults.
Closest comparison
Claude Chat has a Mac desktop app (launched 2024). ChatGPT has a Mac desktop app (launched 2024). Gemini was the last of the three to get a native Mac app but its window-sharing context feature is the most seamless for desktop use. Gemini's standout remains native Google integration.
Gemini in Google WorkspaceGemini works as a sidekick inside the Google apps you already use.
What it is
Gemini works as a sidekick inside the Google apps you already use. In Gmail: finds emails, summarizes threads, drafts responses. In Docs: writes, rewrites, summarizes. In Sheets: analyzes data, creates formulas. In Slides: generates presentations from text.
Use it when
You already live in Google Workspace and want AI assistance without leaving your apps. Draft a reply in Gmail. Summarize a document in Docs. Analyze a spreadsheet in Sheets.
What you need
Google Workspace (personal or business). Google AI Pro subscription.
Plan required
Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) for full Workspace integration.
Limitation
The integration saves time on mechanics (finding emails, summarizing threads, creating formulas) more than it solves "output sounds generic." For that, you still need context architecture. Gemini inside Gmail can draft replies, but they still need your voice and judgment.
Closest comparison
There is no direct equivalent in Claude or ChatGPT. Neither integrates natively into a full productivity suite the way Gemini does with Google Workspace. This is where Gemini is genuinely unmatched.
GemsPersonalized versions of Gemini for specific tasks.
What it is
Personalized versions of Gemini for specific tasks. On September 30, 2026 Google rolled out skills in Gemini chat and said skills will replace Gems. A skill saves your instructions once; you run it by typing a forward slash and its name, stack several skills together, and attach reference files like text documents, PDFs, or images. Google says Gems support ends starting in November for personal accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers, and June 2027 for Workspace education customers, and that it will migrate your Gems into skills automatically.
Use it when
Build new repeatable workflows as skills, not Gems. You have a repeatable task that needs consistent context. A writing assistant that knows your brand voice. A research assistant tuned to your industry.
What you need
A clear role description. Reference files if needed. Custom instructions in Gemini apply to every conversation. Gems apply only when you open that specific Gem. You need different Gems for different tasks.
Plan required
Gems: Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) and above. Skills, the replacement: every Google AI subscription tier, 18+ at launch.
Limitation
Gems are going away. Google says sharing, Google Drive files, and Gemini Notebook notebooks arrive in skills in the coming weeks, and Gems by Google Labs turn down without migrating. Test each migrated skill against a few prompts you use often before you rely on it.
Closest comparison
Claude Projects plus Skills (persistent workspace with context files). ChatGPT plugins (which replace Custom GPTs on December 11, 2026). Both platforms are retiring their custom-assistant feature within months of each other.
Gemini NotebookGoogle renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026, and it remains a standalone product.
What it is
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on July 16, 2026, and it remains a standalone product. An AI research and synthesis tool that works exclusively with documents you upload. Unlike regular chat, Gemini Notebook is grounded in your sources: answers come only from what you give it, with citations to the exact passage. Upload PDFs, docs, transcripts, web pages, YouTube videos. Features include Audio Overviews (AI-generated podcast-style discussions of your sources), Video Overviews, and Infographics.
Use it when
You have source material you need to deeply understand, synthesize, or reference. Analyzing reports. Processing research for a course. Creating a knowledge base from your content library. Any time you want AI to work from YOUR material, not the internet.
What you need
Source documents. Gemini Notebook is useless without uploads. Start with 3-5 documents on one topic.
Plan required
- Free: up to 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook, with standard limits. - Google AI Plus ($4.99/month): twice the free limits, 100 sources per notebook. - Google AI Pro ($19.99/month): four times the free limits, 300 sources per notebook. Since September 2, 2026, personal limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap. Notebooks also show up in the Gemini app. Premium members: the full Gemini Notebook guide has five playbooks.
Limitation
Deliberately limited to your sources. It will not fill gaps with general knowledge. This is its strength (answers you can trace) and its limitation. Deep Research can find new web sources, but you choose what to import. For general research, use Gemini or Perplexity first, then bring findings into Gemini Notebook for deeper synthesis.
Closest comparison
There is no direct equivalent in Claude or ChatGPT. Claude Projects can hold uploaded files, but Gemini Notebook's source-grounded approach (answers only from your documents, never from general knowledge) is unique. The Audio Overviews feature has no equivalent anywhere.
Notebooks in GeminiPersonal knowledge bases shared across Gemini and Gemini Notebook.
What it is
Personal knowledge bases shared across Gemini and Gemini Notebook. A dedicated space to organize chats and files around a project. Move past chats into notebooks, add custom instructions, upload files. Everything syncs between Gemini and Gemini Notebook automatically.
Use it when
Multi-session projects where you want Gemini to maintain context across conversations. Course development. Book research. Business planning.
What you need
A paid Gemini plan (for now). Files or chats to organize.
Plan required
Google AI Plus, Pro, Ultra. Rolling out to Free users in coming weeks.
Limitation
Brand new (April 2026). Still rolling out and evolving. This was the missing piece Gemini needed to compete with Claude Projects for persistent context. But it is early. Expect rough edges and rapid changes.
Closest comparison
Claude Projects (the closest equivalent: a workspace with context files persisting across conversations). ChatGPT does not have a direct equivalent (Memory stores facts, Custom GPTs are isolated, neither is a "project workspace" this way).
Gemini LiveReal-time voice conversation with Gemini.
What it is
Real-time voice conversation with Gemini. Natural, flowing dialogue. Runs on Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking for everyone since September 15, 2026. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers also get Docs Live, and Google AI subscribers get Gmail Live and Keep Live (rolling out on Android and iOS in the US). Integrates with Google Workspace apps, Google Maps, Calendar. Share your phone camera or screen during conversation. Guided Vision (October 1, 2026, Android 9 and up) describes your surroundings out loud through your camera.
Use it when
Brainstorming on the go. The Google integration means you can ask about your calendar, emails, or directions while talking.
What you need
Plan required
Available on Free (limited) and all paid tiers.
Limitation
Same as ChatGPT Voice Mode. Fluid in the moment but doesn't automatically produce usable written output.
Closest comparison
ChatGPT Voice (the direct competitor, currently seen as more polished for longer coach-style conversations). Claude has voice mode on mobile with ~20-30 free conversations/day but is newer and English-only.
Image GenerationText-to-image generation built into Gemini.
What it is
Text-to-image generation built into Gemini. Free tier uses Nano Banana 2 with Personal Intelligence. Image generation personalized using your Google Photos and personal context. Paid tiers include Nano Banana Pro and Imagen 4, which support text in images, realistic photos, and professional-quality outputs. Paid plans can generate images of people. Also includes Whisk (image remixing) and Flow (task automation with visual elements).
Use it when
Quick visuals without leaving Gemini. Imagen 4 handles text in images better than ChatGPT Images 2.5. Nano Banana Pro handles stylized and branded outputs.
What you need
Plan required
Free gets Nano Banana with generous daily limits. AI Pro ($19.99/month) gives you Nano Banana Pro and Imagen 4. AI Ultra ($200/month, reduced from $250 at Google I/O 2026) gets the highest quality and credit allocation. New $100/month Ultra developer tier (also at I/O 2026) sits between Pro and the $200 Ultra for technical leads and knowledge workers.
Limitation
Not Midjourney-quality for artistic or highly stylized images. For brand-consistent visuals with precise color control, Ideogram often outperforms all LLM-native generators.
Closest comparison
ChatGPT Images 2.5 (similar built-in generation, supersedes the older DALL-E generation). Claude does NOT generate images.
Video GenerationAI video generation with sound.
What it is
AI video generation with sound. Describe a scene, Gemini creates video clips. Gemini Omni (launched at Google I/O 2026) is the newer model for creating and editing video from text, images, or existing clips, available on AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra. Veo 3.1 remains the cinematic, sound-on generation engine inside Flow and adds "interactive direction" where you can adjust video details in real time. Industry-leading video generation as of May 2026.
Use it when
Short promotional clips, B-roll, concept demos, visual content for courses or social. Best for experimentation and creative exploration right now.
What you need
Plan required
Veo 3 on Google AI Pro with credit limits. Veo 3.1 on Ultra.
Limitation
Still experimental. Licensing and copyright landscapes are evolving. Not yet reliable enough to replace real video production. But Veo is ahead of the competition since Sora shut down.
Closest comparison
ChatGPT's video generation (formerly Sora, being discontinued). Claude does not generate video. Veo is the more stable option now that Sora has shut down.
Deep ResearchAutonomous research agent that browses the web, reads sources, produces detailed cited reports.
What it is
Autonomous research agent that browses the web, reads sources, produces detailed cited reports. Gemini's version can also access your Gmail, Drive, and Google Chat with permissions, meaning it researches across both the web and your own documents simultaneously.
Use it when
Complex research requiring sourced investigation. The Google data access is the unique value: it can search your emails and documents as part of the research.
What you need
Plan required
Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) and above.
Limitation
The ability to search your Gmail and Drive is powerful but means you need to be intentional about permissions.
Closest comparison
ChatGPT Deep Research (similar web research). Claude Deep Research (often wins on clarity). Gemini's advantage is accessing your Google data as part of the research.
CanvasCreates interactive apps, games, infographics, quizzes, and web pages from prompts.
What it is
Creates interactive apps, games, infographics, quizzes, and web pages from prompts. Generates working, shareable code. Supports multimedia elements with real-time collaborative editing.
Use it when
You want to create an interactive quiz, infographic, or simple web page from a prompt.
What you need
Plan required
Available on paid tiers.
Limitation
Less polished than Claude Artifacts for direct deployment. Still evolving.
Closest comparison
Claude Artifacts (similar: generates deployable interactive outputs). ChatGPT Canvas (more focused on document editing, less on app creation).
Scheduled ActionsGemini runs tasks on a schedule without you in the chat.
What it is
Gemini runs tasks on a schedule without you in the chat. Set up recurring prompts at set times. "Every Monday morning, check my Gmail for unread client messages and summarize them."
Use it when
Recurring task that follows the same pattern every day or week. Daily email summaries. Weekly content reminders.
What you need
Plan required
Google AI Pro and above.
Limitation
Simple automations, not complex workflows. They run a prompt on a schedule. Not a replacement for Zapier or Make for multi-step, multi-app automations. Think "set a reminder that also does the task" rather than a full automation engine.
Closest comparison
Claude does not have scheduled actions. ChatGPT does not have native scheduled actions (you need Zapier or Make). This is unique to Gemini.
Gemini Code Assist, Jules, and Gemini CLICode Assist is Google's coding assistant (IDE extension).
What it is
Code Assist is Google's coding assistant (IDE extension). Jules is the async coding agent (comparable to Codex). Gemini CLI is the command-line interface. All help developers write, review, and debug code.
Use it when
What you need
Plan required
Google AI Pro includes higher limits. Also available through Google Cloud.
Limitation
Less mature than Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex. For non-developers building tools, Claude Code is currently the most accessible option.
Closest comparison
Claude Code (most accessible for non-devs). ChatGPT Codex (most powerful for teams). Gemini's tools are catching up.
Gemini in ChromeA browsing agent that helps you make the most of the web right on the page you are viewing.
What it is
A browsing agent that helps you make the most of the web right on the page you are viewing. Summarizes content, explains complex subjects, assists with tasks on web pages.
Use it when
You want AI assistance while browsing without switching to a separate chat window.
What you need
Plan required
On Android: every user in the US since August 18, 2026, with auto browse for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. On desktop: Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers in the US with Chrome language set to English.
Limitation
US only for now. Auto browse needs a Pro or Ultra subscription.
Closest comparison
Claude Chrome Extension (similar browsing assistance). ChatGPT browser extensions.
Other Gemini CapabilitiesExtensions and @ Commands: Type @ in Gemini chat to connect to Google apps: find emails, summarize Drive docs, play music.
What it is
Extensions and @ Commands: Type @ in Gemini chat to connect to Google apps: find emails, summarize Drive docs, play music. Native integration with Google's full product suite. Google AI Studio: The more technical layer for developers building with Gemini models. Not relevant for most non-technical business owners. Gemma (Open Source): Google's open-source models for local use. Relevant when data cannot be sent to the cloud. Not relevant for most solopreneurs.
